John Drew was the son of Joseph Drew and Elizabeth Adams of Durham, New Hampshire. He was the grandson of Thomas and Tamsen Drew who were captured during the Oyster River massacre in 1694, and released years later. John was married on 12 February 1773 to Jane Scruton. He and his family lived primarily in Loudon, NH where he appears on the 1776, 1790, and 1800 censuses. Shortly after 1800 he purchased 1900 acres in Alton and Barnstead and gave a farm to each of his children.

A Captain John Drew of New Hampshire has a fairly extensive military portfolio, but it hasn't been determined if he is the same as this John Drew. According to the History of Barnstead, NH "Capt. John Drew remains in the grounds at his old homestead, near the old Hodgdon tavern. There is no inscription." The fit isn't perfect, but they could be the same person. According to a computerized listing of New Hampshire Rev. War soldiers, Capt John Drew died Jan. 25, 1825, which seems more than coincidental, suggesting strongly that he and this subject ARE one and the same man.

John's birthdate comes from a family record that appears to be more reliable than the approximate birth year that is calculated from the age given on his tombstone. In general, the older a person gets, the less reliable is their age, so the family record is considered closer to his actual date of birth. John has two different tombstones with identical information on them. They appear to be placed too far apart for one to be a headstone and the other a footstone, but this appears to be the intent of the placement. John and Jane had twelve children, all linked below.
