James worked as a farmer and coal dealer. He married Esther Anastacia Kelly in 1881 and had 8 children, one died at birth. James had an accident which caused a compound fracture of his tibia, eventually necessitating amputation. He died of hemorrhage and shock related to the amputation. He was 48 years old.
