Brigadier General Clifford Willard Gaylord took over his uncle Robert Gaylord's paper/container company in St. Louis, MO when Robert retired and grew the company into what would become America's second-largest paper board products manufacturer.

Clifford was born in Lockport, Will, Illinois, a son of the late Albin Pascal and Virginia Snow Gaylord. He attended the University of Chicago and was married to Catherine Manley ROBINSON Pirrung Gaylord.

He served as a Lt. Colonel and Assistant Chief of Staff in the 77th division of the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I, and was awarded the Silver Star on Nov. 30, 1918. He was a Brigadier General of the National Guard during World War II.

After the war, Clifford served as the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the City Airport Commission, and as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the St. Louis Chamber of Commerce. He also made contributions to the Red Cross and to the Saint Louis Symphony Society.

The Gaylord Music Library at Washington University, St. Louis, MO was dedicated in 1960. The Library, like the Tietjens Memorial Music Studio, was designed by the firm of Smith and Entzeroth of St. Louis. The library was the gift of Catherine Manley Gaylord in memory of her husband, who was a member of the University's Board of Directors from 1941 until his death in 1952.

Brigidier-General Clifford Gaylord continues to be remembered via the Clifford Gaylord Foundation.

He is in our Black family tree as my husband's maternal 2nd cousin, 2x removed.

Thanks to a FAG contributor who prefers to remain anonymous, who alerted me to Clifford's MO death certificate #2820, we now know where Clifford is buried.
