The obituary of R. B. Caudill as published in the July 10, 1941, issue of The Mountain Eagle:

R. B. Caudill Meets Tragic Death July 3

R. B. Caudill, prominent citizen of Blackey, died at the Guerrant Clinic at Winchester on July 3 where he was taken, following an automobile accident earlier that day which occured on Highway 15 near Bowen. Mr. Caudill was enroute to Winchester accompanied by his brother-in-law, Mr. Elkins, of Detroit, Mich. The driver lost control of the car on a curve and it plunged over an embankment causing injuries to both Mr. Caudill and Mr. Elkins which resulted in death for both men.

The body was brought back to the home of Mr. Caudill's parents, Mr. and Mrs. I. B. Caudill, near Blackey. Funeral services were conducted on Saturday morning, July 5 at the Doermann Memorial Presbyterian Church by Rev. Joe T. Sudduth, Rev. Buddie Caudill, and Rev. Akers. Burial took place at the family cemetery near his home.

Besides his parents he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Kitsy Pence Caudill; one daughter, Lois Jean; and one son, Ikie. Two brothers and two sisters also survive.

Mr. Caudill was one of the most highly esteemed and respected citizens of Letcher County. He was employed for a number of years with the County Road Department. His tragic and untimely death came as a great shock to his many friends, and a crowd which overflowed the church auditorium and partly filled the Sunday School rooms came to pay the last tribute of respect. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the wife and children and to the aged parents.
