August was employed by the City of Sheboygan as a street sweeper. On 8 Sep 1916, he was hit by a speeding car. He was turned away from oncoming traffic at the time of the accident and did not see the car approaching. Two co-workers that were with him were able to get out of the way. August suffered many fractures and internal injuries. He passed away 12 days later.
