Reverend John Molesworth Staples was born on 01 September 1776. He was the son of Rt. Hon. John Staples and Hon. Henrietta Molesworth.

He married Anne Alexander, daughter of Rt. Hon and Rt. Rev. Nathaniel Alexander and Anne Jackson, in September 1813.

The Rev. John Molesworth Staples was Rector of Lissan for 60 years; He lived in Upper Moville in County Derry, Donegal where he was responsible for two other churches as well as Lissan. His sons all served in the Navy or in the Army in India. It was he who commissioned Nash to build a new Rectory for Lissan and paid half the cost; he built a cornmill in 1820, local schools and over 20 years planted 32,000 trees in great variety throughout the Townlands.

He died on 04 April 1859 at age 82.

To the memory of the rev John Molesworth Staples, rector of Lissan and Moville, born 1 September 1776, died 4th April 1858, and of Anne, his wife daughter of The Rt Rev Nathaniel Alexander DD, Bishop of Meath born 4th April 1792, died 23rd July 1869. Also the Rev Thomas Staples died August 7th 1761 and Wm Thomas Staples died May 1812, aged 14 years. Richard Staples died May 26th 1820. Right hon John Staples died Dec 26th 1820
