James Potter, son of Judge James Potter married Maria Wilson, daughter of General William Wilson and by her had the following children: Andrew Gregg.

For his second wife, he married Susan Irvin, widow of Thomas Duncan by whom he had the following children:

Maria (married to Dr. Josiah Grover Hendricks)
Annie A. (married to Dr. W.C. Spaulding)
Jacob Lex
Charles H.
Mary Ellen (married to Simeon H. Crane and residing in Chicago).

In connection with his brother, John, he was extensively engaged in mercantile and manufacturing businesses. In 1856 he removed to Watertown, Wisconsin, and afterward to Madison, Indiana, where he died March 22, 1865.
