August Bretthauer, age 26, came to the U. S. with a relative, (brother or cousin?), Christian Bretthauer, age 28, from Hannover, Germany (Hannover at the time was a large northern kingdom, not just the city itself, as it is today). August and Christian appear on the passenger list of the ship Albert which sailed from Bremen and arrived in Baltimore on June 6, 1853. He married Fredericka Grube, July 10, 1855 in Yorkville, Kendall Co., ILLinois. 1870 he is listed as a property owner in Kendall Co., ILLinois. 1876 Directory of Kendall Co., ILLinois list Breckhou, August, farmer, Sec 19, born Germany, owns 80 acres, Value $4,000, Pavillion Post Office. Worked in a brickyard in Chicago to save enough money to bring Fredericka across the Atlantic, before moving to Kendall Co., ILLinois. Emmigration: June 6, 1853, from Hannover, Germany to Bremen to Baltimore, Maryland on the good ship Albert. Occupation: Carpenter/Mason/Farmer. Staunch Lutheran, attended Immanual Lutheran Evangelical Church.
