Carmen Skretting Zettle, 81, of Madison, Wisconsin formerly of New Glarus, passed away on Oct. 26, 2004, at HospiceCare Inc.

She was born on Sept. 18, 1923, in Brookings, S.D., the daughter of Anders and Esther Skretting.

She married Eugene Zettle on Nov. 4, 1944, in Cleveland, Ohio. Carmen received an associate degree in accounting from South Dakota State in Brookings in 1944, before moving to Cleveland to marry Eugene, who was working for the government as an engineer in the Air Force Reserves during World War II. After starting out in Cleveland, Eugene's career took him all over the country, and in her 60 years of married life, Carmen also lived in Park Ridge, N.J., Woodland Hills, Calif., Cincinnati, Ohio, and San Jose, Calif. The couple retired to New Glarus, in 1984, where they lived until last year when they sold their home and moved to a retirement community in Madison. Carmen had the unique ability to make lifelong friends everywhere she lived and she nurtured and maintained each of those friendships for her entire life. She is much loved and will be missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband, Eugene; a son, Gene Zettle of Laguna Beach, Calif.; two daughters, Janet Zettle of Newport Beach, Calif., and Kay (Sherm) Sievers of Verona, Wis.; five grandchildren, Kirsten, Joseph, and Anna Weisenberger and Emily and Ginny Sievers; two sisters, Edith Evans and Erdine (Curt) Engel, both of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
