Andrew N. Damrell was born in Dedham, Norfolk County, Massachusetts in November 1840. He was the 3rd son of William S. and Adeline A. Neef Damrell. His siblings were, Lucuis, Catherine, William and Horace. He was a Cadet at the Military Academy, July 1, 1860, to June 13, 1864, when he was graduated and promoted in the Regular Army to First Lieut.,º Corps of Engineers, June 13, 1864. He served during the Rebellion of the Seceding States (1864-1866). He was awarded a Bvt. Captain rank , Mar. 13, 1865, for Meritorious Services at the Battle of Franklin, Tenn. He was awarded a Bvt. Major, Mar. 13, 1865, for Meritorious Services in the Battles before Nashville, Tenn. He served: as Asst. Engineer in the construction of Fort at Sandy Hook, N. J., July 2, 1866, to Sep. 11, 1867; in command of the Engineer Detachment.
He reverted to his peace time rank of Captain, Corps of Engineers, Mar. 7, 1867) He went to West Point, N. Y., and was Asst. Instructor of Practical Military Engineering at the Military Academy, Sep. 27, 1867, to Sep. 8, 1868. Promoted to Major, Corps of Engineers, Aug. 8, 1882, He continued with surveys (east of Pearl River) to Aug. 14, 1884, when he was relieved of the charge of a portion of the works in Florida, and superintending construction of the Defenses on the Gulf of Mexico, east of Pearl River (being directed, also, to assume charge of Forts Pickens, Fla., Morgan and Gaines, Ala., and Massachusetts, Miss., June 28, and Ft. McRee, Fla., July 15, 1884) to Aug. 30, 1884, when he was relieved of superintendence of all works of defense in Florida, and River and Harbor Improvements in Georgia and Florida, and since that date has continued in charge of Fort on Ship Island, and of River and Harbor Improvements in Mississippi, of Forts Morgan and Gaines, and Improvement of Mobile Harbor and Black Warrior and Tombigbee Rivers; in charge of various Surveys, Bridge Constructions, removal of Wrecks, etc., in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, 1883‑90; as Consulting Engineer for the establishment of a Quarantine Station at Ship Island, Mis., Jan. 15 to Feb. 23, 1886; and as Member of various Engineer Boards, 1883‑86.
Military History. — Stationed at Mobile, Ala., in charge of the fortifications of Mobile and Mississippi Sound, and of improvement of rivers and harbors in western Alabama and eastern Mississippi and of Bogue Chitto, La., Nov. 11, 1868 to Oct. 12, 1895. (Lieut.‑Colonel, Corps of Engineers, Oct. 12, 1895)— At Portland, Me., in charge of fortification and river and harbor works in Maine and New Hampshire, Oct. 14, 1895 to May 1, 1897. — At Mobile, Ala., Engineer 7th and 8th Lighthouse Districts, from May 3, 1897 to to Jan. 29, 1903. He retired from Active Service Jan. 29, 1903, for disability in the line of duty.

He married Leonora Hartwell 06/09/1875, (Book 26, Page 591, Mobile County marriage records.) This union was blessed with 5 children, Maude, Kenneth, Irma, Mabel and Edith. He bought the Georgia Cottage, also known as the Augusta Evans Wilson House, a historic residence in Mobile, Alabama, United States, in 1879. It was sold by his heirs in 1926. He died June 27, 1909, at Mobile, Ala. at age 69.
