Capt. James Montgomery was born in 1747 at Northern Ireland, son of Hugh Montgomery, Jr. and Agnes Jane Cunningham. He emigrated circa 1749 and settled in Pendleton District about 1749-1756.
James married 1st. Elizabeth McConnell, and 2nd. Susannah Strange. Buried on the old homeplace, which was owned by Mr. Twitty.
Family originated in Scotland, moved to Northern Ireland. Settled in Pendleton District (Waxhaws), SC before 1756. Some researchers give birthdate as 1747 which was taken from the DAR erroneous entries in a "Roster of Revolutionary Soldiers in GA: "James Montgomery, b. N. Ireland, came with his parents and three brothers to America. All four brothers were Revolutionary Soldiers. Vol. II p. 87-88; and in Vol. III p.170, "James Montgomery, b. 1736 in Scotland; d. 1808, Franklin Co., GA, served 2nd Lieut., GA Troops. Received bounty land grant in GA for his service. Married (1) 1856 Elizabeth McConnell b.1739 (2) Susannah Strange." The errors are very clear above. There are clearly 'two James' and both (according to the DAR) married Susan Strange. The James who married McClellan appears to have remained in SC and died there. Our James of Jackson Co., GA is the one who married Susannah Strange.
He was Justice of the Peace Jackson Co. May 18, 1801 (1799-1812) Military: James, Sr. served in the Rev. War commissioned as 2nd. Lt., Nov. 8th 1777 by John Adam Neisler (Com. Bk. B. p.276) Militia of Burke Co. GA; was a Captain of the Militia by the end of the war. James was at the Seige of Augusta. He applied for land grants in 1786, of 575 and 650 acres in Franklin Co. (now Jackson Co.), GA. "Historical Notes on Jackson Co., GA", by Frary Elrod, p.19 lists James among early settlers in 1787. Tumbling Shoals first but later moved to Cabin Creek where he built a cabin, where a church now stands (Wilson, "Early History of Jackson Co., GA" In the front ranks during the Indian Wars, he was badly wounded. He drew Lot #255 in 1805 Land Lottery. Died at Hurricane Shoals, his homeplace. Buried on his old homeplace, which was later owned by Mr. Twitty, near Hurricane Shoals (Church). Buried next to David Montgomery (brother?) in unmarked graves. He married Elizabeth McConnell on 1 Mar 1756. He married Susannah Strange, daughter of Michael Strange, in 1778 at Pendleton District, SC; He died before 1 Jan 1808 at Jefferson, Franklin Co., (now Jackson Co), GA. He was buried circa 6 Jan 1808 at Jackson Co., GA.
