Mary Ellen was a tiny petite woman, deeply religious, and full of grit. She was born and raised in Pontiac County, PQ, where she met and married William Frederick Schwartz, a farmer. The couple moved to Ottawa with their family in the late 1890's where William Frederick worked as a painter. She bore 13 children, 6 boys, 3 girls and 5 others that did not survive infancy. After their 9 year old son, Edgar, drowned in the Rideau Canal on a family picnic, they picked up stakes and headed west to Gap View, Saskatchewan eventually settling further west in the Assiniboia district to farm their own homestead. As the depression dragged on in the 1930's and the grasshopper plague hit, they lost the farm. They moved into the town of Assiniboia and the couple celebrated their 50th anniversary in Dec 1935. Frederick passed in 1938 after a long illness and Mary Ellen moved in with her daughter and son-in-law, Elsie and Dewey Gorius. Mary Ellen remained a devout member of the Baptist church and was very involved with charitable work via her church ladies group. She died at age 94 in 1956.
