THERESA T. HICKS
In the death of Mrs. Theresa T. Hicks, which occurred at Bethany Home Wednesday morning at nine o'clock, Douglas County loses one of its earliest pioneer women. Mrs. Hicks came here with her husband Wm. E. Hicks, in 1866, and has resided here ever since. She was the last of the ten original charter members of the Congregational church of this city, and for many years was one of its active members. In the account of the fiftieth anniversary of this church, which was observed last December, we find the following: "During the winter of 1866-67 Mrs. Theresa T. Hicks, Mrs. Anna B. Whitcomb and Mrs. Antoinette Darling, being anxious that the young should have some Christian training, gathered a little flock together in the old stockade and formed a Sunday school." From that time until her health failed, she was identified with the development of the church.
Mrs. Hicks never sought publicity for her benevolences, believing that if she did anyone a kindness, they knew it and that was sufficient. Her death will be sincerely mourned by her many friends.
Theresa T. Hicks, daughter of Hugh and Maria Bancker Miller, was born November 5, 1836 in New York City, and was 81 years, 6 months and 3 days old at the time of her death. May 21, 1855 she was married to William Everett hicks in Brooklyn, N. Y. Mr. Hicks died July 17, 1874. Six Children were born to this union, of whom three survive. They are Mrs. Maria Lewis Canfield of Minneapolis, William Everett Hicks of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Cleveland H. Hicks of this city. (Alexandria)
Brief funeral services were held from the Hicks' home this afternoon at 3 o'clock, Rev. W. K. Williams officiating. The pall bearers were: W. T. Cowing, F. C. Raiter, W. F. Sundblad, J. H. Wettleson, H. A. Schaefer and Robert Brough. Interment in Kinkead Cemetery.
