Merle Frances Shedenhelm was the oldest child of William Thomas Shedenhelm (1866-1937) and Cora Belle Graff (1871-1946). She was born near Ladora in section 23 Hartford township (Iowa Co.), Iowa. She went to country school and graduated from Ladora High School. She then taught country school. On December 26, 1916 she married Clarence William Rinehart (1896-1961).
They had seven children. Inez Ruth Rinehart (1918), Ireta Kathryn (Rinehart) Daniels (1919-1979), Mervaille William Rinehart (1922-1945), Marcella Belle (Rinehart) Parker (1923- ), Elton Duane Rinehart (1929-1983), Avis Jean (Rinehart) Fraker (1934- ), Mavis June (Rinehart) Heishman (1934- ).
Merle's siblings were: Harry Ellsworth Shedenhelm (1896-1992), Ray Clarence Shedenhelm (1899-1979), and Lillian Ruth (Carlson) Shedenhelm (1902-1938).
