An American Civil War veteran, Alexander Gibson was commissioned a captain at Marysville, California, November 1, 1864, and mustered in as commander of Company Company B, 7th California Infantry. Captain Gibson was posted to Arizona Territory. He returned to California and was mustered out with his company at the Presidio of San Francisco April 26, 1866 (Orton, 770).

Alexander married Eliza Frances Clair in California about 1867. Their son, Alexander Gibson, Jr., was born in California in March 1869. The family moved to Washington State where Alexander, Sr. filed for a Civil War veteran's pension January 2, 1891, and received application No. 974,894 and certificate 711,117.

The family moved to British Columbia, Canada, sometime prior to 1907 where Alexander, Sr. died November 12, 1907 in Rossland BC, age 75, per BC Archives death certificate index 1907-09-181270. Birth year estimated from age at death.

Alex Gibson was buried in the Columbia Cemetery (formerly the City of Rossland Cemetery) 14 Nov 1907, Block 5 Plot 261, as a Protestant, with Rev Mr Robinson officiating, J M Jordan undertaker.
