Last Flight of #43-38856 a B17G Flying Fortress of the 381st Bomb Group, April 23, 1945 into the Irish Sea on the Isle of Man. Andrew was drafted into the Army Air Force in 1942 and left his home in the small town of Banning, Pa. One of six children, he was the only son of Andrew and Dorothy Piter. His surviving sister was Ann Piter/Odelli. After basic training and graduation from ordnance school he joined the 381st Bomb Group in Pueblo, Co. from which the unit was deployed to Ridgewell, England in 1943. The 31 men who died that day on North Barrule were buried on April 27, 1945, at Cambridge American Military Cemetery near Cambridge, England, in a ceremony attended by 17 truckloads of men from Ridgewell. Andrew Piter, Jr.'s body was returned to Pennsylvania in 1948 and lies with his parents in Olive Branch Cemetery near Smithton. A memorial was erected at the crash site, now a peaceful hillside, in 1995.
