Charles was the youngest born issue of George Ashwell (1787-1856) native of England, and Mary Springer (1802-1886) native of Delaware Township, Middlesex County, Ontario, Canada. Charles was born on the Ashwell farm at Lot 31, Con. 4 in London Township in Middlesex County.
About 1863 he moved to Lexington in Sanilac County, MI to apprentice in the trade of cabinet-making.
In Huron County, MI on June 9, 1869 he married Lydia Goodall (1849-1893). They had three children, Herbert (1870-bef.1880), Mary Ray (1873-1947)(Charles Cameron Bowman) and Charles Irving (1879-1945).
They left MI in 1876 and settled in Vallejo, Solano County, CA. Charles was a leading man woodworker for many years at the Mare Island navy yard.
In retirement he lived with his daughter who briefly lived in Dinuba where Charles died. He had spent most of his California life in Vallejo and was buried with his wife and younger son in this cemetery.
A street there in the suburbs is named Ashwell Way.
His bio is included in History of Solano and Napa Counties, California published in 1912.
