Born September 25, 1924, he was the son of James William and Mary Etta Morrison Hamblen.
He married Marianne Fritz, who survives.
Mr. Hamblen was a graduate of Cortland High School and a 1947 graduate of Indiana University. He earned a master's degree in 1952 and a doctorate in 1955, both from Purdue University.
He retired from the University of Missouri-Rolla, where he was chairman of the department of computer science. He also had been a professor at Oklahoma State University, the University of Kentucky, Southern Illinois University and the University of Georgia.
Mr. Hamblen was founder and past president of Bartholomew County Genealogical Society, current chairman of Family History Book Committee and had been president and vice president of Brown County Genealogical Society and Southeast District Director of Indiana Genealogical Society. He was first vice president and treasurer of Brown County Historical Society and secretary of Mount Zion, Elkinsville, Taggart, Hamblen/Taylor Cemeteries Association.
A member of St. Paul Lutheran Church at Borchers, Mr. Hamblen served on the editorial committee that compiled "Brown County, Indiana History and Families."
Other survivors include sons, James O. Hamblen of Georgia, Kent W. Muhlbauer of Texas and Mike C. Muhlbauer of St. Louis; brothers, Jesse Hamblen of Columbus, Donald Hamblen of Lanesville and Raymond Hamblen of Scottsburg; sisters, Flora Otte of Seymour and Wanda Wilson of Indianapolis; and a granddaughter, Andrea Lee Muhlbauer of St. Louis.
Preceding him in death were two sisters and a brother.
The Reverend Bob Sullivan conducted services Monday, September 9, at Barkes, Inlow and Weaver Funeral Home on Jonathan Moore Pike.
Burial was in Mount Zion Cemetery in Brown County.
