A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg April 23, 1861, as a private with Co. C, 9th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 29, 1861. He then enlisted in Carlisle August 28, 1861, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 30 as a private with Co. C, 11th Pennsylvania Infantry, but deserted at Rappahannock Station, Virginia, August 23, 1862.

A painter by profession, he married Irish-born Rose Ann Murray and fathered John Brady (b. @1868). Following Rose's death, he married Louisa C. ? and fathered Mary G. (b. @1876) and Charles W. (b. @1878). In 1870-1880, he lived in South Middleton Township, Cumberland County. During December 1884 and January 1885, he suffered two serious injuries within a month falling from buildings while on a painting job. Louisa was denied a widow's pension because of the outstanding desertion charge on her husband's record.
