Died at the Penitentiary.

Edward Porter of Oswego, who was sentenced for two years on the charge of burglary, died on Saturday night in the Penitentiary of peritonitis. Porter had been in poor health ever since his confinement at the Penitentiary, and was ill of this fatal disease about two months. He was 35 years old and would have been released in two months.

Edward Legacy Expired In The Onondaga Penitentiary Saturday Evening - He Was Serving Two Years for Burgalry

About nine o'olock Saturday evening Police Captain Richardson received a telephone message from Supt.
Muskell of the Onondaga penitentiary informing him that Edward Porter, alias Legacy, of this city, had died in that Institution a few minutes previous to the sending of the message.

Porter is about thirty years old and was well known to the police of this city, having been arrested on different charges. The charge on which he was sentenced to the penitentiary was burglary in the first degree and petit larceny. On the evening of April 12, 1893, he. In company with his brother-in-law,Joseph Auclair, entered the residence of Charles Radcliff, 180 West Fourth street, and stole two overcoats. They were arrested on the same evening by the police, and on November 12th of the same year were sentenced to the penitentiary for two years. Their time was nearly out, the commutation allowed for good behavior setting them free some time in July. Porter leaves a mother and one sister.

This afternoon Charity Clerk Kelly received a telephone message from the superintendent of the Onondaga penitentiary stating that the parents of Edward Porter, who died in the penitentiary last Saturday evening, were in Syracuse and that they did not have the means to bring their son's remains home and asked if the department of charity of this city would pay the expense. Mr. Kelly was unable to decide the question and requested the authorities of the penitentiary to hold the body an hour when the department would hold a meeting and decide the question.

Edward Porter's Relatives Say They Were Met Allowed to See Him.

In the Onondaga County Penitentiary Saturday evening occurred the death of Edward Porter alias Legacy Porter was about thirty-five years of age and was sent to the Penitentiary from this city in Novembar, l894, for two years on a charge of burglary for stealing an overcoat from the residence of C.T. Radcliffe, No. 180 West Fourth street. Since his incarceration he has appeared to be in poor health. It is claimed by his relatives that they were not allowed to see him. Porter had recieved terms in the Penitentiary previous to this. It was during one of these that he met his wife. It is also claimed that he abused and maltreated her and then she obtained a divorce from him. Porter has living a mother, stepfather and a number of sisters. The body will be brought to this city for burial
