James left the Buffalo, NY area with 2 of his brothers (David Chapin & Warren Elnathan)and travelled to California during the gold rush in 1850.

Per plaque erected, it states James is buried here in this cemetery. It is assumed that this is, indeed, the same person. Per the SC cemetery archivist's research and burial records, there is some discrepancy in notations:
Cenotaph stone in Bennet Family cemetery located in Cheektowaga, NY (see photo) death date reads "1864", but cemetery record for James Bennett has "Nov 10, 1859" listed as DOD. There are a few other James Bennets listed, as well. Further research needs to be done with the burial records. Newspaper "Daily Alta" death notice published states he died on April 23d, 1866 in Sutter Co. age 49 years.
