Parker was a member of a pioneer Placer County family. His father was a noted author, miner, fruit grower, sheep raiser, and cattleman, who owned extensive holdings in Placer County and was rated as several times a millionaire. Parker, the oldest of his father's three children, however, was more of a playboy and his talents in managing the estate were less than impressive. One family member credits his poor management skills and irresponsible lifestyle with the start of the decline of the Whitney empire. His first wife was Abby Josephine Daisy Parrott, to whom he wed in 1903 and later divorced. His second wife was Louise Carpenter, to whom he wed in 1915. Parker died of heart disease at age 44, his third wife at his bedside. He had wed Katherine (nee Gorby) just four months previous to his passing. He was also survived by his four sons (two by each of his former wives), his mother Lucy (nee Chadwick) Whitney, his brother Vincent Whitney, and his sister Helen Blaine.
