Eliza was the daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth Swartz Frankforter and one of thirteen children: Henry(1827), Simeon(1828), Martha(1830), Andrew(1832), Elias(1833), Efrahim (1835), Margaret(1837), Samuel(1839), David(1841), Jacob(1843), Eliza (1846), Noah(1849), and Mary(1857), as well as 3 half sisters and a half brother. Her mother died when she was young and her father remarried when she was about 12.

She married Sgt. William Henry Hartz upon his return from the war on 26 April 1866 in Wood County, Ohio. They had five children: Charles Franklin, an unnamed boy who lived six days, Elmo Ross, Perlet Milton, and Berton Samuel all born in Lancaster County, Nebraska. Eliza died from La Grippe at the age of 70 years 5 months and 17 days.
