Dr. Evangelist Algerine J. Atkins, 76, of East Palatka, passed away on Wednesday, October 8, 2003 at the Putnam Community Medical Center following a brief illness.
She was a native of Palatka, later moving back to Palatka, East Palatka area in 1990, coming from Chicago, Ill. Evangelist Atkins was a member of the Zion Temple Church of God In Christ and during her membership became Interim Assistant Pastor. She was also Chaplain of Putnam Community Medical Center, the Putnam County Correctional facilities in East Palatka and the Putnam County Sheriff's Office and a volunteer of Hospice and nursing facilities. She was a member of the Ministerial Alliance of Putnam County. Her milestone accomplishment was to earn her Doctoral Degree of Theology at the age of 66.
Survivors are her husband, William E. Atkins, East Palatka; daughter, Connie Olivia Thomas, East Palatka; sons, Charles L. Atkins, Mt. Prospect, Ill.; and Ronnie R. Atkins, San Diego, Calif; sisters, Marie Dryden, Washington, D.C.; Ollie Mazon, Orlando; and Lillie Terrell, Miami; brothers, Walter Junior, Palatka; Charles Junior, Tampa; and George Junior, Boston, Mass.; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
Visitation hours will be from 5-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10 at the D. A. Boyd and Sons Funeral Home and from noon till hour of services Saturday, Oct. 11 at the Bethel A.M.E. Church on the corners of Eights and Reid streets.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. at the church with Elder Antonio V. Ruth, Pastor of Zion Temple Church of God in Christ officiating and assisted by Elder Loverso Walker, Pastor of Faith Temple Church of God In Christ, Daytona Beach, eulogist.
Interment will follow in the Pattersonville Cemetery in East Palatka.
