Inez Cook Cummings, was born September 9, 1909 in a covered wagon traveling through New Mexico territory.
This true Texas woman graced this world for 96 years. Being the youngest of 8 children, she learned early on how to make her voice heard.
Her childhood home was Wellington, where she met her husband of 53 years, Logan Oliver Cummings, at the county fair. Astonished by the coincidence, they began courting after discovering they shared the same birthday. Their great life together was centered on their children, their faith, travel, and a passion for education.
Inez earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics and her Masters Degree in History from Texas Tech University. She taught school for 43 years, 20 of which were spent as a Texas History teacher at O. Henry Junior High in Austin.
She was an active member and Sunday school teacher at the Highland Park Baptist Church in Austin, the order of the Eastern Star and the Daughters of the Confederacy.
Inez moved to Denison in 1984 and continued her full life with her proudest accomplishment, her daughter, Carol Shaffer. She is a prize winning author at Austin College through the "Telling Our Story" program and her faith continued through the First Baptist Church in Denison. A 12 year resident of the Renaissance, she could be found playing Mahjong, going to water exercise, or visiting with friends, Jack, Margaret and Frank. Always dressed to the nines with her jewelry on, Inez was ready for whatever life brought her way.
Inez is survived by daughter, Carol Shaffer, son-in law Phillip and granddaughter Wendy Hallmark and her husband Gary; grandson Andy Hooper and his wife Laurel. She has 3 great-grandchildren, James Hallmark, Lauren Hallmark and Henry Hooper.
She is now with her husband, Logan Oliver Cummings; her children, Janie and John Henry; and her seven brothers and sisters.
She graduated from Wellington High School with the Class of 1925.
