Jim Farmer was born on December 1, 1892, in Sparta, Christian County, Missouri, the son of Wiley John Farmer and Mary Rose Sutherland Farmer. He was the second of three children, and was preceded in death by both, Elvis Farmer and Elizabeth Farmer Price.
His parents married near Nashville, Tennessee, and came to Missouri, by covered wagon prior to the turn of the century.
On November 12, 1913, he and Anna May Jones, daughter of W.T. and Sally Jones, were married in Billings, Missouri. To this union four children were born: Muriel Farmer Ball (born 03/13/1915), George Earl Farmer (born 12/14/1916), James Owen Farmer (born 03/27/1919) and Grace Opal Farmer Christian (born 11/25/1921). In 1925 they moved to Carthage, Missouri, where Jim was a member of the Carthage Fire Department.
After his marriage to Anna May ended, he married Nellie Jane Bowman in 1933, and they made their home in Carthage for the remainder of their years, where they were active and faithful members of the First Christian Church.
During his lifetime, he was not only a member of the Carthage Fire Department, but he was instrumental in constructing most of the highways in Missouri, including Route 66 and Highway 71 (I-49) to Kansas City.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, one daughter, Muriel Ball, and one son, George Farmer.
The span of his long life included the terms in office of 20 Presidents.
At the age of 103 years, same age as his beloved St. Louis Cardinal Baseball Team, Grandpa Jim departed our company to meet his Saviour on March 12, 1996.
