William is the son of Frederick of Grand Duchy, Mecklenburg and Caroline (Wildt) of Prussia. William is from Prussia also. As a child, Wm and his family passed through Castle Garden, NYC in 1856, through Chicago, and settling to farm in Lake county, IL.

In 1861, the family arrived in McLeod county, homesteaded 160 acres in section 23 of South Hutchinson township. The family experienced trouble with the Sioux indians during the 1862 battles.

Wm entered the Civil War when enlisted with Co F 1st MN Mounted Rangers under the command of Capt Daniels. He was discharged in December, 1863.

Shortly after returning home, William's father died and he became the man of the house. (His mother remarried in McLeod county in 1867 to Heinrich Luthens) In 1874, he homesteaded his own farm in Section 13 of South Hutchinson township and married Miss Elizabeth "Lizzie" Rogers, daughter of John and Steno(Haunke) of IL on June 1. The couple had four children at the time of the biography (1888):

The farm in Section 13 had grown to 320 acres and Mr Schultz was noted a prominent citizen of the county.
