Stuart Loe, 61, of Larwill, died at 5:25 a.m. Sunday at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Fort Wayne where he had been a patient for the past week. His death was attributed to congestive heart failure.
Mr. Loe had been in failing health since 1968 and in 1970 submitted to the amputation of his right leg. Six years later it was necessary to amputate the left leg.
He was a native of Richland township and was born near Wilson Lake on May 15, 1917, a son of Jesse R. and Ada Butler Loe. His formative years were spent in the Wilson Lake community, and he graduated from the Larwill High School with the class of 1935.
He was first employed at the steel mills in Gary. After spending a year there, he came to Columbia City where he managed the Standard Service Station at the intersection of South Main and Ellsworth streets.
During Word War II, he served with the sea Bees of the United States Navy in the Asiatic Theater.
Following the war he returned to the Columbia City where he was employed by the Protane Gas Company. He later operated a milk route for Centeral Dairy of Fort Wayne.
On May 8, 1946, he was united in marriage to Genevieve W. Hefflin. Their first home was in Washington township and since 1957 their home has been in Larwill. Mr. Loe's last employment was with the Wonder Bar and a substitute mail-carrier out of the Larwill Post Office. At the time of his death he was serving as the president of the Larwill town board and had been a member of the board for the past ten years.
he was a member of the South Whitley Masonic Lodge; South Whitley VFW Post; American Legion Post 98. His church affiliation was with Grace Lutheran Church.
The surviving relatives include his wife, Genevieve Loe; three sons, Richard L. Loe R 2; Larry L. Loe, R 1 Pierceton; Terry L. Loe, Larwill; one daughter Mrs. Stanley (Patricia) Loy, R 1 Larwill; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; his stepmother, Mrs. Bertha Loe, Columbia City; two brothers, Stanley Loe, Naples, Fla. and Phil Loe, Fort Wayne; three step-brothers Sherman Kneller, City; Paul Kneller. R. 5; Ray Kneller, Indianapolis; one step-sister, Mrs. Clella Richard, Tulsa, Okla.
His parents and a grandson have preceded him in death.
The body is at Smith and Sons Funeral Home where friends may call after 7 p.m. today and after 2 p.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Graham Kleespie will officiating at the funeral Wednsday at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
Interment will be in the Lakeview Cemetery at Larwill.
Columbia City American Legion Post 98 will present military honors at the graveside.
The South Whitley Masomic Lodge will conduct the ritualistic twilight service of the order at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
