Averill served the Union cause during the Civil War, enlisting on 8/11/1862 at Black Brook, New York, as a private in Company "K", 118th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He was mustered in for duty on 8/30/1862. He was discharged at Richmond, Virginia on 6/13/1865. The regiment would see duty/battle at Drury's Bluff, Cold Harbor, Second Seige of Petersburg, Battle of Swift Creek, Battle of Chaffin's Farm and more. The 118th was the first Union regiment to enter Richmond after it had been abandoned by the Confederates. The regiment lost 6 officers and 93 enlisted men killed or mortally wounded and 188 enlisted men died of disease or other causes. 12 officers and 226 enlisted men were wounded and recovered. 9 officers and 133 enlisted men were reported missing. After serving provost duty in Richmond and Manchester, the 118th New York Volunteers were mustered out of service on June 13, 1865. He filed for his veteran's pension on 7/10/1890 and was awarded certificate #795846.Sarah applied for her widow's pension on 12/9/1910 and was awarded certificate #953906. The file card shows Averill died 7/21/1910.

The 1880 US Census shows the family living in Black Brook, Clinton County, New York, where Averill is employed as a "bloomer". The family home consisted of the following:
