Henie Pero Shelden

Shelden, Henie Pero 87, of Concord Village, MO passed away on July 2, 2012. Henie donated her body to St. Louis University Medical School. The Medical School holds a memorial service every fall to honor the donors and it was Henie's wishes that we not hold a separate memorial service.Henie was born in Nashville, IL on September 28, 1924 the daughter of Stephen and Dorothy Pero. Henie loved growing up in a small town. Her family home was right on Main Street and she loved being in the middle of everything. She was also very proud of her Polish heritage. She was named after her grandfather, Andrew Henry Pero and often lamented that she could have been named Andrea. She graduated from Nashville High School and attended business school in Belleville, IL to learn rapid calculation and shorthand. Henie worked at Scott Field during WWII and she always said her contribution to the war effort was dancing with the soldiers. She remained an avid dancer throughout her life, enjoying Polka music and Country Western line dancing. Even when she was feeling poorly later in her life, she said you can't help but be happy when you are listening to Polka music. After WWII, Henie and a friend caught the bus to St. Louis to find a job and a place to live. She met her future husband Max at the boarding house where she lived and was married to him on November 5th, 1949. Upon meeting Max's family, she said that she had never met people quite like the Sheldens. That was the beginning of a loving marriage with never a dull moment. In addition to raising 4 children, Henie volunteered and later worked at Gravois Rest Haven, where she played the piano, read to residents and organized fun activities. She was also a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for many years, both delivering and packing meals. Henie is preceded in death by her husband, Francis Max Shelden, her brother, Stan Pero and her sisters, Clem Ernst, Rose White and Esther Pero.
