Born and educated in Gloversville, N.Y., she was the daughter of Assemblyman Denton Lake and Jennie Baird (Davis) Lake. She continued her education at the Mary Burnham School in Northampton, the New York School of Applied Design and McDowell in New York City.
A resident of Marblehead for more than 70 years, she was a member of the Marblehead Garden Club for more than 55 years and a past treasurer of that organization. She was also a member of the Marblehead Visiting Nurse Association, the Marblehead Museum and Historical Society, Salem Hospital Aid and the North Shore Medical Center Auxiliary. She was a longtime support of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Swanson is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Diane and her husband, Rudy Barbour, and a son, Robert Butler, Jr., all of Marblehead; two stepdaughters, Carl Swanson Brubaker of California and Utah and Barbara Swanson Smith of New Hampshire; four grandchildren, Robert Butler III of New Hampshire, Cynthia Butler Carbone of Wenham, Brian Butler of Boston and Douglas Barbour of Marblehead; five grandchildren, Christine Smith Grande and Jennifer Smith Johnson of Rhode Island, Rebecca Smith Emery of Florida and Susan Brubaker Chokachi and Scott Brubaker of California; and 10 great-grandchildren, Katelyn Marie Barbour, Elizabeth Catherine "Ellie" Butler, Andrew and Alexander Carbone, Nicolas Brubaker, Brandon Johnson, Nicholas and Benjamin Grande and Sarah and Christopher Emery.
