died at his home in North Heath after a long illness; former well known resident of North Adams; was the last survivor of 11 children of Alonzo and Phebe (Bishop) Hicks; moved to Brimfield in 1876 remaining there about one year; in the fall of 1877 he went to Kansas and lived there 3-1/2 years; spent the summer of 1881 in Iowa, returning to Massachusetts in the fall of that year; for 30 years a successful contractor and builder in North Adams where he did building for Arnold Print works, Gallup & Houghton and Strong, Dewat & Co of Briggsville; had charge of building the weave shed and the large store house of Arnold Print works and many other industrial plants; among the better houses he built were the residence of the late Senator George P Lawrence and H W Clark; did much building in Brimfield, Shelburne Falls, Charlemont and Heath besides other nearby towns including the Baptist church in Stamford, Vt., Baptist church in Readsboro, Vt., Unitarian church in Rowe, Mass. and the Boston and Maine passenger depot in Shelburne Falls; Dec 27, 1883 married Miss Carrie A Simpson of Southbridge who died Aug 11, 1913; three children were born to them Harvey Linn Hickes of Chicago, Ill with the Eastman Kodak company, Rev. Clarence Orman Hicks of the Church of Advent in Boston, and one daughter Mabel a church worker in Boston; Oct 14, 1914 he married Miss Mary C Burrington of Heath who survives him; although never held public office, keenly interested in politics and public affairs; member Heath Grange and Heath Historical Society; funeral at Heath Union church
