Schad, Franz W. (May 20, 1868-March 19, 1900 –second husband of Margaret [Maggie] Linck Hacker [married Aug. 21, 1897 in civil ceremony, City of Manitowoc] –son of Franz Schad and Maria Dietrich –born Town of Schleswig –farmer in Town of Eaton –on Dec. 29, 1898, purchased the 80 acre farm in the W1/2 of the NE1/4 of Section 12, Town of Eaton –this farm was directly west from the 80 acre farm owned by his parents –this was shortly after his marriage to Maggie Linck Hacker –on the evening of March 19, 1900 Franz murdered his wife Maggie and then committed suicide – “suicide –died instantly” –“A terrible tragedy was enacted on a farm near the village of St. Nazianz. Frank Schad, a prosperous young farmer, murdered his wife, after a terrible struggle, and then cut his own throat. That his wife made a desperate struggle for her life was evident from the confusion and disarrangement of things in the barn where her body was found. In the morning after the tragedy the little step-son of Schad on arising discovered in a room adjoining his own sleeping room the lifeless body of his step-father lying on the floor in a pool of blood, but his mother was nowhere in the house and he went to the barn in search of her. Here he found her gashed and bloody remains. After killing his wife Schad cut his own throat and then went to the house, leaving a trail of blood from the barn to the house. The terrible deed is said to be due to the insanity brought on by religious troubles. His wife had been divorced from a former husband [Albert Hacker of Cato] and he was denied the sacraments of his church in consequence of his marrying such a woman. This troubled him so that his mind was upset.” –from Two Rivers Chronicle, March 27, 1900, front page – “The evidence taken before the jury showed that about four years ago Schad showed signs of insanity and wandered about in an almost naked condition. Fears as to his sanity were again expressed but recently.” –from Two Rivers Chronicle) –buried at St. Gregory Catholic Cemetery in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton [buried in Section 1, Row 15, Lot 17 –stone] [marriage record Manitowoc 6-416] [death record Manitowoc 6-251]
