Greetings,
Find A Grave contributor Phidadle has made a suggestion to you regarding your Find A Grave memorial for Charles Cobb.
Their suggestion:
Sandra,
My brother did genealogy in the 70's and 80's on the Cobb family from Elder Henry of Barnstable to Warren M. Cobb, our father.
(In the 70's and 80's there were no computers)
All his research was leg work. He traveled to Vermont, visiting town hall archives and cemeteries. Living in Boston, he did research in the Public Library. He went to Plymouth and Barnstable many times to do research. A few years ago, he gave me his (10) typed binders of the Cobb Genealogy, including an index of names, and surnames. I then transformed his work into "Roots Magic".
His entry:
Capt. Charles Cobb (HVI. 170)
s. Benjamin & Sarah (Ransom) Cobb (V.79 & .80)
b. Carver, Ma., 17 Mar 1790.
m. Sylvia or Silve Rickard (VI.171) Plympton, Ma.
on 9 May 1813.
da. Simeon & Rebecca (Bartlett) Rickard
b. abt 1794.
frm. Plympton, Ma.
d. Carver, 18 Sep 1863, ae. 69y.
d. No. Carver, 15 Jul 1867. ae. 76y-4m-9d.
It was a well known practice in the 19th century to name a child with the name of a parent, and the middle name of the grandmothers or mothers maiden name:
Benjamin (Spooner) Briggs of the Mary Celeste who's mother was a Cobb and wife was his cousin, a Cobb.
John (Crocker) Cobb, William (Harlow) Cobb, are just a few examples.
Whether or not you except my input, makes no difference to me.
