Aletka Hobday Calvert, 99, died Tuesday, September 11, 2012 in Winchester, Va.

She was kind and loving and tried to help everyone all her life.

She and her late husband provided shelter to many homeless people over the years.

Born September 3, 1913 in Morgan County, West Virginia, the daughter of John C. and Tennessee Luttrell Hobday, she graduated from Berkeley Springs High School and started her working life at Shenandoah Apple Plant, moving then to Washington, D.C. to attend Strayer College.

At the outbreak of World War II, she went to work for the Navy Department in the Casualty Branch writing condolence letters to the families of lost and missing sailors. She retired from the Navy Department.

John W. Calvert and Aletka were married in 1957 on the Bride and Groom Show, a TV program from New York City in 1957.

She made her home with her daughter and grandsons in recent years.

She loved petting her two cats by the hour and watching her favorite religious programs on TV and also attending birthday and yard parties, taking car rides and going places.

She was a member of the Sligo Seventh Day Adventist Church in Hyattsville, Maryland.

Survived by her daughter, Gretchen Largent and grandsons Jimmy and William Largent; also nieces Hilda Mannato and husband Larry of Gorham, New York, Sylvia Moore and husband Jim of Canandiagua, New York; nephews Peter Hobday and wife Sabine of Hudson, New York and Eric Hobday and girlfriend Polly Hart of Salt Lake City, Utah; great-niece Rachel Mannato of Parshall, Colorado; great nephews Josiah Moore and wife Ruthie in Rochester, New York, Jordan Moore, Nathaniel Moore, Jonathon Moore and Joshua-John Mannato and wife Lynn of Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Preceded in death by her brothers Samuel Hobday and his wife Maya Kahle Hobday, Kenneth Hobday and infant brother, Gladstone Hobday, also an infant granddaughter, Connie Jean Largent.

She worried about the world's starving children and supported organizations who helped them, so in lieu of flowers please donate to World Vision, P.O. Box 70224, Tacoma, WA 98481-0224 and Feed the Children, P.O. Box 36, Oklahoma City, OK 73101-003.

A funeral service was held on Monday, September 17, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at the Winchester Seventh Day Adventist Church, 1508 Valley Avenue, Winchester, Va., with Pastor Wayne Spangeberg officiating. Burial followed at 2:00 p.m. at George Washington Cemetery in Adelphia, Maryland.

The family received friends Sunday evening, September 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home on Pleasant Valley Road in Winchester.
