"PROBABLE LOSS OF A SCHOONER
The schoonover Thomas Van Gilder, which left this port for Jacksonville on August 16, has not since been heard from, and it is feared that she has been lost with all on board. She carried a crew of about seven men, and was commanded by Capt. Ezekiel Van Gilder. The Captain was about 30 years of age, and has a family residing in Southern New Jersey. She was worth about $10,000, and was owned by a relative of the Captain's and several others. The insurance on her is probably not large. She carried a cargo of about 300 tons of railroad iron, consigned to one of the new Florida roads, and was worth something over $9,000. She measured 227 tons, and was built at Tuckahoe, N.J."
