Ismael Rivera was born in Loiza Aldea, Puerto Rico.He and a childhood friend, Rafael Cortijo, founded a band called Cortijo y su Combo. Known as "El Sonero Mayor", Rivera learned the bomba and the plena, folk music forms of Puerto Rico, at an early age. Ismael was very adept at singing and improvising.Some of his greatest hits were “El Bombón de Elena,” and “El Negro Bembón.” Upon release from a brief period in jail for a drug violation, fhe started the band “Ismael Rivera y sus Cachimbos.”
