Bernard was born in Lower Badoney, County Tyrone, Ireland and in 1858 his entire family immigrated to the US settling in Wabasha County.
The family had a farm and in 1862 when he was 20, his father died. He was the oldest son and took on the responsibilities of helping with his 9 younger siblings and running the family farm.
In 1875 he married Mary Sophia McMullen and he moved to his own farm in Oakwood.
They had John J, William P, Margaret, Mary Elizabeth and twins Michael and Elizabeth who were born June 14, 1880 but did not survive to adulthood.
He continued farming until his death.
