April, 1896
The death of Mrs. Michael Fitzgerald on Monday morning cast a gloom over the many friends of that estimable lady, and their sympathy goes out to the grief stricken husband and family. Mrs. Fitzgerald had been a sufferer for years with bronchial troubles, and about ten days before her death was confined to her bed, until the angel of peace bore her spirit to the land that knows no pain or sorrow.
Johanna Farrell was born in Youghal, county Cork, Ireland, nearly 67 years ago. She came to America in 1850 and a year later was married to Michael Fitzgerald in Brooklyn, N.Y. Her husband, who is now 78 years of age, survives her. Mr. and Mrs. Fitzgerald came to Boone thirty years ago, coming May, and have lived here ever since, raising their family and being honored and respected by all. Besides her husband Mrs. Fitzgerald leaves six children to mourn her death. All reside in Boone and were with her during her last hours. They are Maurice Fitzgerald, Mrs. Danny Rafferty, David Fitzgerald, Mrs. J.M. Bollinger, Michael Fitzgerald and Miss Annie Fitzgerald.
The funeral took place at Sacred Heart church on Tuesday, High Mass being celebrated by Rev. B.C. Lenehan. A large concourse of friends and neighbors followed the remains to its last resting place, the internment being made in the Catholic cemetery.
