Elizabeth was the fifth of six children born to John Burr Gould and Mary More Gould. Elizabeth was raised at Roxbury, New York where her father was a farmer. Her mother died when she was just six years old and her father's second wife, Mary Ann Corbin Gould assumed the responsibility of raising her. Elizabeth married to Gilbert Ezekiel Palen on 19 September 1860 at Roxbury. They made their home first at Canadensis, New York where their first two children were born. They relocated to Tunkhannock, New York about 1870 where their third child was born. The family relocated permanently to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania about 1877 where her husband was a physician. Elizabeth and Gilbert were the parents of four children; Anna Palen, Rufus Palen, Gilbert Joseph Palen, and Walter Gould Palen.
