According to court records in Sampson County, North Carolina, John Oates died in
1826 in Sampson County, North Carolina.

Wilmington Daily Journal, Wilmington, N. C., Thursday, July 18, 1861
Died, at the residence of William W. Faison, in Duplin County, on the 11th
instant, of paralysis, Mrs. Susannah Oates, in the 77th year of her age. She
was a member of the Baptist Church for many years.

After the death of her husband, John, Susannah Cogdell Oates had a very
difficult time with her husband's family in reference to John's estate. In the
book, "A Portrait of Nineteenth Century Sampson County as revealed by Sampson
County Court Minutes, 1820-1830" compiled and edited by Oscar M. Bizzell and
Virginia L. Bizzell, her husband's brother, David Oates, was appointed
administrator of his estate (20 August 1827). David was also appointed guardian
of his brother's children (Susan Oates vs David Oates & Other Heirs at Law of
John Oates). We know that Susannah Cogdell Oates was competent, as she had a
will and her estate was settled by October 1861.
