John Sephus Mack, circa 1935
John Sephus Mack was president of the G. C. Murphy Company, a prominent American variety-store chain during the early 20th century.

A native of Indiana County, Pa., "Seph" Mack began his career as a stock room clerk at McCrory Stores in Johnstown, Pa., which was owned by his cousin, J. G. McCory. By 1908, Mack had become general manager.

In 1911, Mack and another employee, Walter C. Shaw, resigned from McCrory and purchased McKeesport, Pa., based G.C. Murphy Co., which owned about a dozen “five and dime” stores near Pittsburgh. By the end of the 1930s, G.C. Murphy Co. was a publicly traded company with more than 200 stores east of the Mississippi River, primarily in the mid-Atlantic and Appalachian region.

After his untimely death in 1940, the J.S. Mack Foundation was established in his memory. It operates Mack Park in Indiana, Pa. Buildings named for Mack include the J.S. Mack Library at Bob Jones University and the Mack Wing of Indiana Regional Medical Center in Indiana, Pa.

This photo, taken about 1900 on the John Martin Auld farm near Heshbon, shows the John Mack family, some of his relatives and friends.
In the first row is baby Sara Auld McCormick.
In the middle row are Cora Mack Hovis, Harry Groat, Sarah Murphy Mack, John Mack, Henry Groat and Effie Younkin Lower. In the back row are John Sephus Mack and a friend, Ed Wakefield, Nannie Mack Wakefield, O.T. Briggs, an unidentified individual, Jennie Mack Auld and Dan Harmon. (Submitted photo)
John Sephus Mack, born March 9, 1880, died on Sept. 27, 1940.
He became president of the G.C. Murphy Co. and was a benefactor of Indiana Hospital, Camp Seph Mack and the J.S. Mack fairgrounds.

G.C. Murphy's Richmond, Virginia, store on Broad Street and Fourth designed by Murphy corporate architect Harold Ellsworth Crosby. It was demolished to make way for a parking lot in 2004.
