He was a brick mason at the Wasburn and Moen still mills which became part of US Steel and worked there with father and 3 brothers. He worked at both the Northworks and Southworks steel mills in Worcester and helped his father in the construction of some of the massive brick chimneys that survived long after the mill had closed down.
