In 1900 he and his parents and sisters Ophelia and Arena lived in a house they were renting at 223 Strayer Street in Johnstown, PA. His father worked as a laborer at a steel works.

In 1910 he and his mother and three siblings lived in a house they were renting at 155 Pine Street in Franklin, PA. He worked as a motorman on an electric crane, and Daisy as a waitress in a hotel.

In 1920 he and his wife lived in a rear apartment they were renting at 171 Main Street #3 in Franklin. He worked as a craneman in steel mills.

In 1930 he, Myrtle, their three children, and a nephew, 16-year-old Charles W Elkins, lived in a house they were renting for $23 a month in Saint Clair Township, Westmoreland County, PA. They did have a radio. He worked as a laborer at an electric power plant.

In 1940 he and his wife and their three children lived in a house they owned on Route 711 in Seward, PA. Their home was valued at $2000. He worked as a fireman at an electric plant, with an income in 1939 of $1950 for 52 weeks of work.
