E.O.W.: 12/071964
Robert Everitt was hired as a San Diego police officer in 1957 and promoted to Sergeant in March 1964.
On December 7, 1964, at 5:30 p.m., Everitt was sent to assist at the scene of a minor non-injury accident on Highway 80 (now Interstate 8) ¼ mile east of Taylor Street.
Since the accident occurred in a location that could be hazardous to passing motorists, Sergeant Everitt began laying flares as a warning. At the same time 60-year-old Harry Morimo was driving towards the accident scene at 50 mph completely unaware of what was ahead. As Morimo came around a bend he saw Sergeant Everitt standing in the road and tried to swerve.
At the same time, Sergeant Everitt ran towards the shoulder. Unfortunately, Morimo swerved too much to one side and the back of his truck struck the sergeant. The truck then sideswiped another car before careening into oncoming traffic.
The impact left Sergeant Everitt lying on the ground with a broken back and massive head injuries. An ambulance arrived and took him to Mercy Hospital where he died at 11:55 p.m.
Sergeant Everitt lived in Poway with his wife Shirley, two teenage daughters and a son.
