General of Carabinieri, Commander of the Clandestine Front of Resistance of Carabinieri known as "Banda Caruso". Belonging to a middle class family with a military tradition, he followed a military career. He attended the Military Academy and took part in the Italo-Turkish War (1911 to 1912) and in 1914 joined in the Carabinieri Corps. Caruso took part in the First World War, where he was decorated with two bronze medals of Military Valor and appointed captain. After the war Caruso graduated in law and he served as an officer of the Carabinieri in various parts of Italy. In January 1942, he was appointed brigadier general and in March 1943, he was discharged for reasons of age. After September 8, 1943, the general Caruso, officially retired, gave birth to the Clandestine Front of Resistance of Carabinieri, organizing the carabinieri in units for the fight against fascism in the places occupied by the Germans. Arrested by the German police on 30 May 1944 and imprisoned in the SS prison of Via Tasso, he resisted to torture without speaking (remained crippled and was declared "great war-invalid") and managed to escape at the last minute. Decorated with a Gold Medal of Military Valor, he resumed service by reorganizing the territorial structures of the Carabinieri gradually that the Italian territories were freed. He continued his work as a Division General until 1957.
