Roggy Cemetery is located off County Road 1500E and one-half mile north of County Road 2200N, between Princeton and Walnut, Illinois, on farm land now privately owned. Originally it was owned by the Roggy family. They and their neighbors, mostly farmers of German decent, used a piece of the land as burial grounds for their relatives lost. After the Roggy family sold the land it was determined it could never be used for any other purpose, so in 1896 an association was formed to establish the cemetery.
About one-half mile north of the cemetery once stood Roggy School, a one-room school house that was consolidated with Bureau Township School in 1919. The first burial at Roggy Cemetery is recorded as being in 1855 and the last in 1909. Although several obituaries from local newspapers state burials were at Roggy Cemetery up to about 1919.
An article from the Bureau County Tribune on May 2, 1924 stated that several remains from Roggy Cemetery were relocated to nearby Walnut Cemetery. This was the article in its entirety, given no other information. For decades after that the cemetery was uncared-for, the small grove of trees and vegetation started to devour the two acres of land where Roggy School and Roggy Cemetery stood.
In 1998 relatives, who had ancestors buried at Roggy, decided to reclaim the little cemetery and so began a restoration project. Years of overgrown trees and underbrush were cleared and with the help of the original plat book the marked and unmarked graves were identified. An article from the Bureau County Republican on July 4, 1998 stated four more graves were moved to Walnut Cemetery by the request of relatives, but no surnames were given.
Today Roggy Cemetery is well maintained, but questions remain as to whom or were all removed and reburied to other cemeteries in Bureau County. It is possible that all that is left at Roggy Cemetery are headstones.
