Add PhotosTo reach this cemetery take the Fines Creek Exit off Interstate 40 W. and continue right on the Lower Fines Creek Road which is paved for approximately two miles where you will pass the Fines Creek United Methodist Church on the right. Continue one and five tenths miles further and the Fines Creek School will be seen on your left. Continue on the main road until you reach an intersection two tenths of a mile where there is a white farm house and a barn on your left. Directly across the highway on top of the ridge across from the farm is located the Penland Family Cemetery. There is no easy access to the cemetery and I found the easiest approach was to pull off the road and walk up a dirt lane beyond the ridge, then climb the hill by walking through a plowed field, climbing a fence and following cattle trails to the top. The cemetery is one of the oldest in the area and has been completely abandoned. Where once was a well maintained cemetery containing over three hundred graves, there only remains traces of the cemetery and the whole crest of the ridge is heavily overgrown and portions impossible to walk through. Some families have long since transferred many of those buried here to other cemeteries. However, I would estimate that the majority remain in unmarked graves. I counted approximately twenty-five stones and did find two tomb stones which I could identify. One was placed against a tree and the other broken. It was related to me that ownership of this property has changed hands and that eventually it is the intension of the present owner to sell off this land into lots. I trust that at least a portion of this very old cemetery will be preserved in the future, since this cemetery was one of the first established by our early settlers in the area.
