Jeffries Cemetery
Putnam County, Indiana, USA
39 51 18N Latitude; 86 46 09W Longitude
This cemetery is on private property. Obtain permission from property owner before visiting this cemetery.
Directions:
Go east out of Roachdale on US 236 about one mile to Co Rd 425E, which is just east of the Roachdale Cemetery. Turn left and follow 425E north about 1/3 mile. The road will cross an abandoned railroad. Turn right into the field and follow the old railbed about ¼ mile east. The field will narrow to about 20 feet. Cross this spot (which is usually really wet) and go to the extreme northeast corner of the field. There is a single tombstone about 50 feet north into the woods, about 50 feet back west from this northeast corner of the field.
Condition: Fair
Single stone in woods not too far from a field. The stone is broken in half right between the name and the dates. The two pieces are leaning against trees, as is the footstone. It wouldn't hurt to cut the briars right at the edge of the field to make access easier and the stone more visible. I'm not sure about repairing and resetting the stone. I'd almost rather leave the pieces as there are. If we do put it back together and reset it, I'm worried a tree will fall on it break in into many pieces.
