Poindexter Cemetery was about three miles south of Dillon in Poindexter ranchland in School District No. 3. It was sometimes called Cottonwood Cemetery. The first burials there were made before the railroad came north into the Beaverhead valley. The earliest marker found was for a death in 1867; the last burial was in 1917. In 1896 Samuel and Elizabeth Ashbaugh deeded to the Poindexter Cemetery Company the 1.35968 acres known as "the old 'Poindexter Burying Ground'". Mountain View Cemetery opened in 1888. Some families moved their people from Poindexter Cemetery to Mountain View Cemetery. What were thought to be the last remains in Poindexter Cemetery were removed to Mountain View Cemetery in 1920 and 1921. Three more sets of remains were removed from Poindexter Cemetery in 2017. Several tombstones abandoned at Poindexter Cemetery were relocated to Mountain View Cemetery at that time and placed along the east fence there. Over 100 burials are known to have been made in Poindexter Cemetery. Record of reburial in Mountain View Cemetery has been found for 73 of them. Names of those buried in Poindexter Cemetery have been gathered from obituaries and news articles in historic papers, from the Mountain View Cemetery burial book and sexton's book, from funeral records and returns of death and from grave markers found on the ground at this site. Poindexter Cemetery is no longer an active cemetery.
